Hot water canyon in Thuès: an exceptional geological setting

But where does this providential hot water come from?

It first seeps into the Puigmal, Canigou, and Carança massifs, at an altitude of 2,000 meters. Along its course, it penetrates deep into the subsoil and is heated by contact with the hot rocks of the Earth's crust. Then, the Têt fault, which gave rise to the Pyrenees mountain range, allows the hot, sulfurous water to rise to the surface. It can reach temperatures of up to 40°C!

This is how we find hydrothermal springs in the Pyrénées-Orientales, notably in St-Thomas-les-Bains, Thuès-les-Bains and Vernet-les-Bains.

In Thuès, the water runs through pretty mineral gorges, to the delight of canyoning enthusiasts!
